Struck from 80% silver, the first 50c was intended to be ‘the glamour coin’ of the decimal changeover. Rising metal prices sealed its fate, however, and with the intrinsic value outstripping the face value, it vanished from circulation. As the next 50c was neither silver nor round, the 1966 50c was rendered a unique type.
